Ruffwear makes outdoor gear for dogs (harnesses, packs, boots, and coats for working dogs and adventure pets), but there’s not a lot of bark in their brand. In this episode, Semiserious pitches @ruffwear brand strategies that speak to the modern dog-obsessed, outdoor community in a comedic brand voice.

Semiserious founders, Allie LeFevere and Lyndsay Rush Sanders, are lifelong dog lovers and owners of rescue pups, so it was time to put that knowledge to the test for this dog performance gear company. (There were 5 campaigns and 23 slogans in total!) Pop over to our agency website to see the full, designed spec work and enjoy the highlight reel! Cesar Millan, WHO?

FYI: This episode was recorded before we rebranded from Obedient Agency to Semiserious Agency.

Key Branding Ideas from This Episode:
  • Shifting the narrative from resilience as endurance to resilience as empowerment transforms customer expectations and brand positioning.
  • Brands can reframe rugged products as tools for liberation, encouraging consumers to see durability as a means to expand their lifestyle, not sacrifice it.
  • Everyday routines and mundane experiences can be transformed into moments of adventure through a mental shift and intentional branding.
  • People seek significance in daily life; making ordinary moments feel extraordinary inspires engagement and loyalty.
  • Using animals like dogs to symbolize attributes such as loyalty, adventure, and exploration creates a relatable, instinctive framework for branding. E.g., positioning products as “best friends” on life’s adventures.
  • Campaigns can promote “rescuing” your everyday life from dullness, positioning products as catalysts for rediscovering fun and freedom.
  • Transforming products into prompts for action elevates their perceived value and encourages consumers to integrate them into life’s journeys.
  • Marketing can leverage active language that invites consumers to “embark” on their next adventure, making brand engagement proactive.
  • The traditional work schedule is a limiting paradigm; framing life as a series of “pauses” opens space for spontaneity and exploration.
  • Challenging the grind mentality can inspire consumers to prioritize experiences over routine, creating deeper emotional ties.
