[FYI: This episode was recorded before we rebranded from Obedient Agency to Semiserious Agency.] High, hello! CANN makes THC and CBD social tonics, so Semiserious showed off their humor marketing chops and pitched a Dry January (CANNuary) campaign using comedy. See the winning cannabis drink campaign concepts and brand strategy ideas for @drinkcannsocialtonics.

This episode of “Can They Brand That?®” is so silly it may give you a contact high. We see plenty of cannabis brands mentioning Dry January in a post or two. Still, we think it’s a missed opportunity not to go hard promoting their alternative buzz leading up to Dry January. We, for two, could hardly contain all of our highdeas.

Key Branding Ideas from This Episode:
  • Leveraging humor and wordplay, such as turning “dry January” into “high January,” creates memorable, countercultural campaigns that break through traditional abstinence narratives.
  • Such approaches shift perceptions, making abstinence fun and aligned with identity, not just restriction, changing the emotional landscape of health campaigns.
  • A cannabis brand during dry January could reboot itself around high January, framing the month as an opportunity for elevation rather than deprivation.
  • Positioning the product as the loophole reframes abstinence as proactive and empowering, not restrictive.
  • This mental model transforms the challenge from a sacrifice to an opportunity for brands to become enablers, altering consumer self-perception and loyalty.
  • Instead of trying to compete with zero-tolerance campaigns, brands can embrace the loophole concept, making their product part of a clever solution rather than a vice to be avoided.
  • Launching campaigns around moments like December allows brands to pre-build anticipation for January engagement, especially when tied to cultural narratives like New Year resolutions.
  • Timing creates a sense of inevitability and participation; if people are already in a mindset of change, the right message can catalyze action.
  • A cannabis brand could tease high January campaigns starting in December, positioning itself as a seamless part of New Year’s fresh starts.
  • Conventional abstinence promotes restriction, but flipping the frame can make the behavior more inviting.
  • By reframing restrictions as enhancements or alternatives, brands can influence consumer behavior through positive association rather than guilt.
  • Messaging that promotes “buzzing without booze” makes sobriety feel adventurous instead of abstinent.
  • Using humor and playful language, “It ain’t Jan without CANN”, creates a sense of community and eases barriers that serious campaigns often face.
  • Humor fosters emotional engagement, making the brand relatable, memorable, and capable of shifting social norms around cannabis use during dry months.
