Kraft French Dressing (the bright orangey-red staple found on Lazy Susans in mid-America) is one of the most forgotten products in a $120 billion condiment market. In this episode, Semiserious pitches the humor brand strategies to make French dressing “très chic” again.

It was a silly realization that turned into a ridiculous creative challenge for this episode of ‘Can They Brand That?’: What if @KraftDressing were branded as truly French? We spent less time on finding out why it’s called French (someone should look at Andressdry.com. Ouch, that joke hurt.) and more time brainstorming a campaign that reimagines this decidedly unfancy dressing as the height of sophistication and good taste…and as French as the name implies. (There were 36 slogans in total!) Pop over to our agency website to see the full, designed spec work. Hosted by: Allie LeFevere and Lyndsay Rush Sanders

FYI: This episode was recorded before we rebranded from Obedient Agency to Semiserious Agency.

Key Branding Ideas from This Episode:
  • Consumers respond more to perceived identity than actual origin, enabling brands to innovate or reposition with satirical ties to the image.
  • Embodying a persona through playful language transforms mundane products into cultural icons.
  • Using humor, wordplay, and character-like branding elevates everyday items to aspirational or cultural symbols.
    • This approach taps into consumer fantasies, making ordinary products memorable and emotionally resonant beyond their functional value.
  • Effective branding is often about creating a sensory or emotional world, not merely the product itself.
  • Humor and absurdity serve as powerful tools to destabilize traditional branding, making offerings more memorable
  • Using playful absurdity disorients typical brand messaging, inviting curiosity and delight.
  • Humor breaks through the noise and embeds brands deeper in memory by challenging expectations and engaging consumers’ sense of fun.
