Tushy makes bidets and has turned a bathroom taboo into one of the funniest, most viral DTC brand strategies ever. In this highlight, Semiserious breaks down the brand concepts that made @HelloTUSHY impossible to ignore and adds its own genius ideas into the mix. Tushy’s brand strategy is a masterclass in humor marketing for taboo products.
In case you’re living under a rock (without a toilet…ew), they make bidet attachments or, in their words, a “modern bidet that easily clips to your toilet & transforms your health, hygiene and life.”
After reading that last sentence of theirs, we can all agree that they need a flush of brand personality up in there, so that was the challenge on this episode of ‘Can They Brand That?’ where we ideated THIRTY-SEVEN funny tagline options in 43 minutes. For the math dweebs at home, yeah, that’s almost one solid-gold tagline per minute, so we filmed our creative brainstorm and made it into this Oscar-nominated short film. Hosted by: Allie LeFevere and Lyndsay Rush Sanders
FYI: This episode was recorded before we rebranded from Obedient Agency to Semiserious Agency.

Key Branding Ideas from This Episode:
- Injecting humor and absurdity into everyday or professional topics can generate stronger emotional engagement and differentiation.
- Traditional branding often leans toward seriousness; embracing fun and silliness makes your brand memorable and human.
- A company adopting a humorous, playful tone can stand out and create a delightful connection with audiences.
- Thinking in exaggerated, humorous scenarios helps break mental blocks and sparks innovative ideas.
- Complex problems or routine tasks become less intimidating when approached through an absurd lens, leading to novel solutions.
- Using humor encourages thinking beyond constraints and invites bold experimentation.
- Shared jokes or playful language establish a sense of closeness and trust more quickly than conventional professionalism.
- Casual, funny banter can humanize a brand, lowering barriers and fostering authenticity.
- The significance of embracing stupidity as a creative tool. Relentlessly poking fun at being “stupid” or silly opens up space for unconventional thinking.
- This mindset reduces fear of failure, encouraging experimentation and pioneering ideas that might otherwise seem risky.
- Acknowledging dumb ideas, then exploring them fully, leads to breakthroughs; a team that “likes” its own bad jokes is more willing to take creative risks.
- Transforming mundane functions, like cleaning or hygiene, into symbols of personal care or pride redefines their importance.
- This shifts the perception from a routine chore to an empowering or humorous ritual, deepening connection with the product or service.
- Playing with language uncovers hidden emotional cues that resonate differently from standard marketing.
- Unexpected wordplay can evoke surprise and delight, making messages stick and fostering a playful brand personality.
- Reinterpreting everyday phrases in humorous ways unlocks emotional appeal, encouraging deeper engagement and recall.
