Franzia is America’s best-selling wine brand that’s best known for its “bag-in-box” packaging and as the star of the popular drinking game “slap the bag”. In this episode, Semiserious pitches brand strategies that embrace the Franzia paradox and turn “cheap wine” into a comedic cult identity.

So think of this episode as the slap heard ’round the world. It’s the least we could do for all of the memories @FranziaWines has given us (okay, it was college, so those memories are a tad fuzzy).

You’ll hear our “game tape” recap & insights right at the start of the episode before we share the highlights from the real-time brainstorm. (There were 30+ slogans in total!) Pop over to our agency website to see the full, designed spec work. Hosted by: Allie LeFevere and Lyndsay Rush Sanders

FYI: This episode was recorded before we rebranded from Obedient Agency to Semiserious Agency.

Key Branding Ideas from This Episode:
  • Language isn’t just communication; it’s a tool for group identity and signaling status. Recognizing this can help craft more resonant messages that align with people’s deeper aspirations.
  • Referencing outdated or nostalgic elements, such as “slapping the bag,” creates a distinct cultural contrast that stands out in a crowded space.
  • Counterintuitive as it sounds, embracing perceived “kitsch” can foster authenticity and build trust with audiences craving realness and personality.
  • A luxury brand might deliberately incorporate vintage styles to position itself as timeless and genuine, rather than constantly chasing the newest trend.
  • Redefines what is trivial, making ordinary behaviors into deliberate acts of identity assertion, increasing their psychological value.
  • Using humor, such as “Merlot class” or “tap that glass,” acts as a strategic way to question norms and create memorable distinctions.
  • Humor cuts through skepticism and allows brands and individuals to position themselves as authentic rebels, fostering emotional loyalty.
  • Brands leveraging satire or absurdity can disrupt established categories and build a distinct voice that appeals to a more conscious, discerning audience.
  • Language that evokes emotionally charged images or states can reinforce desired behaviors and mindsets without overt persuasion.
